The beauty with ESO is that you can pretty much play any role with any of the character classes. Some of the classes may be slightly better suited to certain roles, but you if you really want to, you could play a heavy armour 2-handed sword wielding sorceror.
But generally speaking:
Sorcerers make for good ranged dps classes as you'd expect. You'll get bonuses to your magika for wearing light armour, and destruction staffs make for a good weapon. Sorcerers have a couple of companion pets that you can use, so if you like pet classes then this one might be for you. They are pretty much "cast and forget", so you don't have much control over them.
Templars are the only class out there with a dedicated healing spec, but they also make good tanks. You can heal with any class by the way, using the restoration staff.
Actually - that's a bit of a lie, as if you have the Morrowind update, then you can access the Warden class, which also has a healing skill set. I believe they can also tank nicely, and have the companion pet too.
I don;t know too much about the other classes, I guess the Nightblade is your classic scout class, with melee dps, and the Dragon knight looks to be a bit of hybrid tank/dps class maybe?? Not too sure, maybe someone else can give you some more info on that.
Personally, I have a Sorceror DPS character which is quite fun, but my main character is a Templar healer. The Sorceror is great soloing with, as they have some nice heal procs the can keep you alive when you crit hit. Can do great AoE dps and single target. I found the Templar quite slow to solo with, but that may be because I was concentrating on skilling up the healing trees. Now that I have alot more skill points, I don;t have any problems with it and can hold my own, when running through solo stuff, but still can't kill as quick as the Sorc.
I also have played the Warden, which I have enjoyed. I know a few others who have had fun with the Warden, so if you have the Morrowind update, that might be worth a crack. It's a well rounded class, dps and survivability are both very good.
Hope this helps. See you in-game
Macc
Oh, by the way - Once you join the guild, it is account wide. So you'll automatically be a member with all of your characters.

Yeah warden is very capable solo and works well as a support dps, tank or healer :)
if you like super slicey melee dps then nightblade is very fun, ranged dps sorc is a fun one to learn the game with and you can rock a pet build to make solo really easy.
Dragonknight is a good one if you want to have easy survivability to start off with :)

Thanks Ox, I like Nightblade, and the ranged dps Sorc sounds fun, having a Templar right now, like the attacks :-)
